Just picked up 320GB external HD for my iMac (wow, those movies take up some space). Was a good price and after hooking up, the drive is not mounting via Firewire. When I use the USB option, I'm getting a read. Not sure if this my iMac is too new for this older drive or what. Any suggestions out there? Looked through the Western support site and nothing found that could help understand the problem .

Perhaps the firewire on it is broken?

My wife and I both have iMacs. We recently bought another external harddrive for each of use. I had to "format" the ext harddrive several times before my iMac would read it. On her iMac, she plugged it up and it worked right away. You might have to go to applications-utilities-disc utility, select the drive (through USB) and format it. That might help the Firewire connection. Otherwise I'd say the Firewire cable is bad or the firewire jack on the EXT HD is bad.

I took it back and ended up ordering the Porshe model from Apple website. It rocks and works great, no problems!

Just out of curiosity, did the Firewire 400 work? I just got a 250 Gb My Book Pro, and I've only gotten the firewire800 to work once! Firewire400 and USB works without problems at all.
