Google is so easy, I wonder why others aren't using it. First hit is X-bit labs - Hardware news - Intel to Bring-In 3GHz Quad-Core Chips, 1600MHz Processor Bus.

I read someone already upgraded their MacPro from dual dual-core to dual quad-core several months ago...

Eight core Mac Pro@2.4Ghz
AnandTech: Apple's Mac Pro - Upgrading CPUs, Memory & Running XP

Eight core Mac Pro@2.66Ghz
The unofficial eight-core Apple Mac Pro - Alpha Blog - alpha.cnet.com

Thing is, for the cost of upgrading those CPUs you can flog your Mac Pro and get a shiny new one for less $$$

Huh? A "shiny new one" is still a quad machine, not an octo.

The net cost of upgrading a quad 2.66 to an octo 2.33 is about $900 ($893/ea for the new chips, eBay value of about $450/ea for the old chips).

I read these quad-cores cost a grand. If that's correct a pair of them would therefore cost 2Gs. One could sell their current high end Mac Pro for that much and add a grand or so to purchase a basic configured eight-core Mac Pro. So what is the better option, spend 2Gs to upgrade the CPUs or spend a grand on top of selling their current machine for a brand new eight core Mac Pro which could include extras such as a high definition optical drive?

If the quadcore CPUs are much cheaper than that please feel free to correct me.

Edit* Just noticed you thought I meant a current brand new Mac Pro.

The prices of the quad core chips vary from $360 (1.6Ghz) to $1200 (2.66Ghz).
If you're going to consider the value of selling your current Mac Pro to buy a new Mac Pro, you should be comparing that to the value of selling your current CPUs to buy new CPUs.

As I said in my last post, the net cost of upgrading a quad 2.66 to an octo 2.33 is about $900. That's less than your estimate for the cost of buying a new Mac Pro and selling your old Mac Pro.
