Yeah, I'm going Intel Mac Pro, but I didn't want to give up on the G5 too early.

Now it's time to do switch and do the upgrade to Intel Mac.

How many cores do you go with the Mac Pro:

I cannot see how 8 cores would not go to waste for most desktop usage, at least at this point in software development. Nevertheless, it's a cool achievement.

I think 8 cores is excessive for most tasks. I have 4 cores which only get used for some things...

I agree that few apps on their own could use 8 cores intelligently, but I am rarely caught using only a 1 or 2 apps. With my multi-display setup I often have more than one thing cranking at any one time. I might be running ruby script while running numbers in R while surfing the web while I am waiting for those two things to finish.

It's valley talk, too. Nor Cal Pirates! (wooo, blast from past.)

8, assuming the clockspeed is equal. Currently with what I'd do, however, I'd rather have 4 at a higher clockspeed than 8 at a lower one. I max 4 cores more often than I'd like, but I still don't want to lose single threadded app performance.

8 is nice, but a little overkill.
The Mac Collection:

Power Mac G4 Sawtooth at 450MHz, Power Mac G4 Gigabit Ethernet at 400MHz, three Power Mac FW800's at 1.0GHz, MacBook Pro at 2.0GHz, my late father's G3 iMac at 350MHz, an iMac at 500MHz, a PowerBook G4 (12-inch VGA) and a PowerBook 170
