My system is running in slow-mo at the minute. The spinning ball just appears and locks my system up, usually for no real reason. When I run Verify Disk, it asks for my password then rather unhelpfully says this:

I can't proceed or run Repair Disk.

Any ideas? I've freed up some more HD space since I took this screenshot but no joy.

Many thanks.

First thing to do is boot from your Tiger recover DVD and run Disk Utility from there - if that fixes the problem you should be good to go. If not, make sure you have a backup of your files, wipe the disk and reinstall. If that doesn't work, you might want to get a program like DiskWarrior to try to repair the drive.

It could always be the hard drive itself that is at fault too - just to keep in mind.

I got disk utility to work from the Tiger disk! It was a little confusing because I was trying to follow the instructions in the middle of the screen and didn't notice the menu at the top

Things are definitely better. Is there anything else maintenance wise that I can do to improve the speed of my system?

Disk Utility is like a bandaid for your drive, whereas Disk Warrior is more like a full medical procedure. The reviewers say Disk Warrior is one of those utilities every Mac owner should have, and I agree. In addition to repair of the drive, Disk Warrior also does disk catalog optimization, which improved performance.

It looks like I had inadvertently activated 1120 fonts as well. Stupid Linotype! I swear I never touched it!

Anyway, things are running much better now.

How many fonts is acceptible? 100? 200?
