I'm having major issues trying to get my mirrored-drive door G4 powermac to boot into firewire target mode. Any time I boot holding down "T", early in the boot sequence (nothing on the screen yet), the machine just completely powers off (!).

The same thing happens if I request target disk mode via the startup disk panel.

Any ideas? I'm stumped!

Some background info:
- running 10.4.9
- no open firmware password (checked with nvram -p)
- G4 firmware update applied (I think I'm at 4.4.8f2)
- known good fireware cable connected already to another powered mac (new iMac)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I may have found the answer to my own problem; target drive must be on bus 0:
