Got a 17" 2.0 Ghz Intel iMac that came with 1.5 GB of RAM.

I'm runing Parallels and whenever that's open, everything becomes 'sluggish', apparetnly it's quite the memory hog.

So, do I simply upgrade to 2GB in order to get the benefits of 'matched' pairs of RAM, or should I pop for a 2GB module and end up with 3GB total, (1x2GB + 1x1GB)??

Do the advantages of 'matched pairs' outweight the advantages of more memory? (2gb vs. 3gb)

Finally will any of this really help Parallells?

Matched DIMMS do make a difference, albeit a very small one. Optimally, you'll see a 10% boost. In my opinion, it really doesn't matter.

I can't be sure without knowing which programs you're running under Parallels, but I'm guessing your problem is RAM amount, not RAM speed. You're running two operating systems, plus emulation software, plus whatever software under Windows.

Throw another 2gb stick in there, for a total of 3gb. You can never have too much RAM.

I agree. You're problem has more to do with the amount of RAM you have. Add more and you will be fine.

Matched pairs in some PC's brought nice speed boosts, but in most Mac's this has not been the case...for the most part.

Okay, so the consenus seem to be more is better than less...

Anybody got a good connection on 2GB 200-pin memory sticks? Seem to be in tight supply/very expensive.

Currently I've got (1) 512MB stick + (1) 1 GB stick

Thinking of removing the 512 and replacing with a 2GB stick.

As for the programs I'm running in Parallells, it's sluggish when I'm running "nothing" in parallels. I'm refering to the slugishness of the Mac Applications when Parallels is open, not the Windows Apps. (What I'm using the Parallells for mostly is to run Quickbook Pro which is the accounting software our company uses. It's not a very memory or processor intensive application, pretty basic.)

Perhaps there's some other reason why the Mac Side feels so slugish with just Windows XP running and nothing else?

I've only seen matched pairs for sale for 2GB items.

2.0GB Matched Pair (1024MB(1GB) x 2) Tech... (TWK126590001) at OWC

$175 for a 2GB kit - a pair of 1GB dimms.

You might be better off just getting one more 1GB dimm.

Not a bad price at all.
