Even when my imac 2.0 Ghz 20" duo core, is sleeping the fans keep turning on and off. There will be a clicking and a winding up of the fan, and then a click along with a whine as they turn off. This happens day and night. I don't have any bluetooth, and I have unplugged my firewire & USB HDs, and every other cable but the keyboard... Apple support had me reset the PRAM, SMU and now asking me to boot from my install disc.

I am not getting something here. I hold down the 'C' and it starts up the installer, but can I boot into OSX from the disc? Support wanted to see if the fans still ran. I can't put it to sleep once in the installer. I don't know what booting into the installer will accomplish...

They have suggested that if the problem still exists while booting with the disc, that I need to take it to an Apple repair place, but if it doesn't, then I need to reinstall the OS...

I don't really like my 2 options... However, if someone can tell me what booting from the install disc "means", and if anyone has their fans turning on and off while their machine is sleeping, let me know. The fan seems to be in the top left. Cheers...

They just want to verify if the fans are turning on (abnormally) because of your current Mac OS X install. Booting from another configuration (e.g. install disc) will let them know if it is specific to your install or not. When you boot using the Install CD, you can run something else like Disk Utility (under one of the menus). If you have the Apple Hardware Test CD or AppleCare Diagnostics CD (the one with Micromat's software) they should also help you out.
