I have a iMac G3 Bondi Blue Tower, running OS X 10.4

Practically anything that has text, (the menu, text under the folder icons, etc.) looks like a block with and "A" inside it. So my whole menu shows only blocks with a's inside them. wierd.

How do I get back the text?

Thanks for any and all help.

You're either missing a font or have the system font selected to a font you don't have installed. Go to International preferences and make sure you have English set.

As there is no such thing as a Bondi Blue iMac tower, let's start by identifying what it is you do have. There is a reason for this, I'm not just being bitchy and trying to correct your terminology.

If what you have looks like this:

http://www.apple-history.com/?page=g...&order=ASC

You have a Blue and White G3 tower, not an iMac. If what you have looks like this:

http://www.apple-history.com/?page=g...&order=ASC

Then you have a first generation revision A or B iMac. There are others of this design; they came in more colors (including Blueberry, often mistaken for Bondi Blue) and had processor speeds of 266 or 333. All of this generation have a tray type CD drive.

Like I mentioned, there is a reason for properly identifying your computer. The tower officially supports 10.4; the tray loading iMacs do not. I do not know if 10.4 is able to be loaded onto such an iMac but the problem you are describing may be a manifestation of trying to run an unsupported OS on your computer.

Looking further on apple-history.com, there are some models of the slot loading iMac generation two that support 10.4, and some that do not (only going to 10.3, as with the first generation iMacs). Proper identification will determine which operating system your computer supports and may help identify if this is the problem.

Steve,
Thanks for your response. My husband uses the G3. All he does is surf the net, and draw in Claris draw. No fonts were touched. English has been set. He's unsure of himself so he doesn't mess with anything. When I tried to use Disk Utility it said the HD needed repair. However, a third party cd drive is installed and my husband can't find the stickie that had the keyboard strokes to activate and boot from the Tiger disk. And for the life of me i can't recall them. I tried various combinations but to no avail.

Reboot with the disk in the drive and hold down "C".
