Hello,

I'm new to the forums, after getting my Power Mac (my first mac!), and after figuring out how to get all the system information, I find myself a little more confused..

The computer was given to me as a gift. A G4 Power Mac, 400 MHz. When I got into the system profiler, it stated the computer name as "Power Mac G4", but the machine model is listed as "PowerMac3,3", and the CPU "PowerPC G4 (2.9)". The model number is M5183, which I found as the number for a lot of G3s (hence my concern).

I'm just wondering if there's just something with the machine models that is different, and I should ignore that and focus on the G4. The reason I'm trying to be so specific is because I really want to upgrade the processor, but I'm not sure what I should search under (looking under G4 did not turn up my model number for upgrade sites).

Thanks so much!

Your machine is a PowerMac G4 Gigabit Ethernet model. Apple Spec Page

There are numerous upgrade options, but the model is an older one today. If you try to upgrade it to new-machine specs, you'll end up spending far more money than the cost of a new machine.

It is a nicely expandable machine, I'm just suggesting that you decide what you want from it and set a budget.

Thanks so much for all the info!

I'm definitely not looking to get G5 performance out of it, or run anything new or massive. I'd just like to speed up some of the processes (learning Applescript and Cocoa, so as long as I can run those smoothly...).

I'm guessing that the 1.2 GHz would be the best way to go, because of the better cache (unless it won't make a big difference with my bus speed at only 100 MHz).

Thanks again!

With your low bus speed, you definitely benefit from more cache. I'd say the 1.2 is a good choice - there is one very like it in my older PowerMac AGP.
