Hi,
My apologies in advance if my solution is already on here somewhere, but I've been searching around for a couple of days now, and I haven't found it yet.

I've just got a 1.24 ghz single processor MDD G4 (2 FW ports). I've tried all startup key combinations, open firmware, (reset-nvram, reset-all, etc.), but I always get stuck at the same point. Just after the apple appears and the rotating progress indicator starts, it suddenly freezes, with two horizontal bars of corruption on screen.

I also have a working 400mhz G4, so I've been able to test the dvd drive, hard disk, keyboard, and agp graphics card.

I've replaced the memory with 2 Kingston 512mb pc2700 ddr simms (2.5v, cl 2.5), which I've run tests on in a Pc ( )

My hard disk from the 400mz G4 has 2 partitions, one with osx 10.2.8 and the other with 10.4.8, and they both work perfectly in the 400.

I've even tried a ppc Linux install cd, which ran perfectly in the 400 and installed on a spare hd, but it locks up in the MDD, both as a cd and as the linux hard disk.

The 33mhz IDE bus for the optical drive doesn't seem to work either, but when I plug the ribbon into the 66mhz IDE socket, the DVD runs ok. When I hold the alt/opt key down, it recognises all of the available boot OSs on CDs and HDs, even shows the penguin icons on Linux in the graphic selector screen !

I also tried removing the heatsink and processor board, and very carefully re-seated it with fresh heatsink compound.

Open firmware works fine, I wondered if there was anything else I could do in there ? Excuse my initial ignorance of Macs, but I'm lost at the moment without a bios settings screen as on PCs (where's the tin hat smilie ? !!)

Sorry for such a long first post, but this is driving me nuts, and my dream G4 ambition is turning out to be a nightmare !

Could be a motherboard issue. Have you tried booting OS X in verbose mode (cmd-V on bootup)? That might give you a clue as to what is failing.

I tried the cmd-V and that shows the apple and rotating progress for a second or so, then I get the big white square with the "You need to restart your computer..." message.
At least it didn't lock up with the horizontal bars !
Any other thoughts/suggestions ?

Thanks for the reply. (all help gratefully accepted !)
