I just got my 24" iMac about a week ago.
I love it.
Just a question about a noise I hear when it starts up or wakes from sleep.
I have been using it everyday, testing and evaluating it for speed and what I could do with it. For the first four or so days I shut it down overnight and would put it to sleep now and then. Because of its newness I was really paying attention to how quiet it is and how fast it runs. I would show my wife how quickly it woke from sleep. Well when I showed her that stuff I did not hear anything out of the ordinary.
Yesterday when I went to start it up it made a momentary whoosing sound (sounds weird but like a sighing). I didn't think anything of it. Then when I went back to it later to wake it up I heard the same sound. So then I did some experimenting and it does it every time it starts or wakes up.
It isn't a big deal and doesn't bother me other than it wasn't doing it before I am hoping there is nothing wrong with it. It's in a relatively quite room and can even be heard with the TV on if you know to listen for it. I am pretty sure it wasn't there before because when it was brand new and I was admiring its quite operation, I specifiacally had the room extra quite so I could see if I could hear anything.
It's almost definitley one of the fans or the harddrive spinning up.
I just wnder if anyone can tell me if they hear the same type of sound. I am hoping it just started because it is worn in and hopefully it isn't teh beginning of a problem.
Thanks.

Probably the optical drive checking if there is a disk present. Is there a disk in the drive?

No disc in the optical drive. That had crossed my mind though, so I checked. It sounds like it is coming from the lower left quadrant when facing the screen.

It could be the fan revving up for a quick couple of seconds. That's what the G5s do. I'm pretty sure it's normal.
