My G4 will boot and run normally for a couple of minutes then the power goes off to all components. If I try to restart it immediately nothing happens. If I wait 10 minutes the computer will boot and then run for a few minutes before the power shuts off again.

Any suggestions? Does anyone know where to get a cheap replacement power supply? I have power supply from a rev A G3 300 tower but it does not look like they are compatible.

Check that the fan is spinning in the power supply because it might not be working thus the power supply overheating and turning off.

I think seanc is on to the problem. Check this out:
Hardware Monitor: Description
See if your power supply is overheating.
Apple made a whole lotta different power supplies for the G4's.

I've replaced a couple of GigE power supplies...they had the symptoms you described (but the fan was working) before failing completely. They're not cheap, but you can get them at GALAXY/hp - Apple PowerMac G4, Xserve G4 : Power Supplies. They also have a free diagnostic service.

Those prices are horrific, they all are, no matter where you are in the world. You can with some reading and patience mod a normal ATX power supply to work in a DA/QS but it would mean that the ADC port and old style ACDs wouldn't work.

If anyone's interested i'll write up a PDF explaining how to do it. I replaced my dead QS PSU this way, works flawlessly.

I would be interested in seeing this. I would like to keep this machine going but I don't want to put too much money in to it.

Thanks

The power supply from my Gigbit Ethernet G4 is very noisy and is probably going to fail in the near future. I have problems starting the computer sometimes and have to reset the PMU. I would also appreciate a guide to converting an ATX power supply.

Many thanks for the guide. I think the Gigabit Ethernet G4s also have a 22 pin connector so I am presuming the procedure would be the same.

yup, you wont go wrong with that. as long as you don't need to power a ADC display.
I've done ATX convertion on B&W G3 & Sawtooth. All working fine till today.

I'm not sure. You'd have to find the pinout and check it before you attempted this.
