So I got talked into buying this G4 from a co-worker, I was told it only needed a HDD..

It is a Imac G4, 700mhz 256mb ram and 40gb HDD

I buy it and he does not have the recovery CD's ... I replace the HDD and all but am stuck ..
Obviously it needs an OS but i need to know what ..

Previously he said it had OS 9 and OSX (i beleive 10.1)

What CAN i put on this .. and WHY do they have OS9 and OS X on them? is that standard ? is this something i have to do in the future ?

Can i just get OS X 10.4 and install it ? the retail version ? What are my limits / requirements / etc.

Any ideas / help / feedback is much appreciate ..

I promise I am not a idiot just an idiot with MAC's

Thanks in advance

well i suppose i can answer one of your questions. at the time your mac was built osx was in its infancy and was not feature rich. it was also not well supported with 3rd party software. os 9 was packaged with it for those who still used os 9 software. since you apparently have none you really don't need os 9. what do you hope to do with this machine?

Yes, you can simply buy a retail copy of OS 10.4 and pop it right in. No problemo.

Yes just insert the CD/DVD and boot while holding C to boot from the Disk Drive.
