I have a powerbook at the moment, and I'm thinking of getting a second Mac. It'll either be a mac mini or an imac, but one thing I think I might need is the ability to keep a very quite computer switched on with the screen off (to act as a file server for my laptop).
Can I do this with an imac - switch off the screen by pressing a button on the computer without switching the computer off?
Presumably with a mac mini, it would be a matter of switching off the cinema display (I'd probably get a 20" screen)
Thanks for the information

I don't think you can instantly turn off just the LCD. You have to put the computer to sleep. However, when I need to use my iMac to serve up music or whatever, I just go to the Energy Saver panel and set the monitor to go off after a few minutes. Works fine.
I just upgraded from a 20" iMac G5 to a 24" iMac. I used to think my G5 was quiet, but the new one is even quieter. Of course, everything is quiet compared to my noisy PC.

On my MBP when I reduce the brightness to the lowest level it basically turns off the screen. Wouldn't that work on the iMac too?

Yeah, that should do the trick as well. Just don't move the mouse though (or unplug it to be safe).
On my ACDs the lowest brightness setting doesn't turn the screen off either but that kinda makes sense since there is also a dedicated on/off button. I don't quite understand why the brightness setting doesn't allow you to turn off an iMac screen.

Sleep Display Application or Widget. I have a G4 and Dell screen, so can't say if it works or not with an iMac.
