I know this topic may be old, but i need optical out on my G4 mac mini. Thinking about purchasing a USB unit but unsure which one to buy. Looked at the M Audio Transit but the reviews were not the greatest. Do any of you guys have this device? If so/not, could you recommend one for me.

Thanks,

Dee

Do you need 5.1 or just stereo over optical?

5.1 would be great but not neccesary. Mostly listen to itunes through a home theater system. I am disatisfied with the RCA cable hookup (just doesnt sound that well). I mostly look @ DVD's w/ a denon upconvert player, not the mini.

Pants.. I just ordered an iMic.. but that's much better!

Does anyone have experience with the product above (or similar) and OS X?

I bought a SB Live! external with digital out and I could never get the digital out to function in OS X. Worked fine when I would reboot to XP though...ended up returning it for a M Audio HarmonyAudio...doesn't have digital out, but does exactly what I needed it to do and does it well...

I have one of these:

Amazon.com: TURTLE BEACH Audio Advantage Micro: Electronics

It works great for stereo optical output, (I bought mine at a local Best Buy) but the 5.1 drivers don't work with OS X, so you're stuck with stereo.

The only way to output 5.1 digital is if you encode it (using Dolby Digital or something similar). I don't know of any external 5.1 solutions for Mac, but if you're fine with digital out then the Transit is pretty good. I had one for recording jam sessions on my iBook, and it did its job well.
