I installed mac OS X 10.3 on a desktop mac that had OS 10.2.8, thinking it would upgrade. Upon restarting, there is nothing I can type or click, only a gray screen with this:

"DEFAULT CATCH code=300 at &SRR0: 05610848 &SRR1: 00003030
Apple PowerMac 3, 3 4.2 8f1 BootROM built on 10/11/01 at 14:12:47

HELP! Have I wiped the hard drive? It won't start up past this message, any suggestions on what I should do?

thanks!

No, the hard drive should be ok. Your computer is set to start up in Open Firmware, somehow.

Turn the computer off, then turn it on while holding down the command, option, P, and R keys (all four at once). Hold them down until you hear the startup chime twice, then release them. Hopefully the computer will restart normally after that.

Aternatatively, when it boots into open firmware again, type the following:

set-defaults
reset-nvram
reset-all

The last command should reboot the machine.
