Hi, I'm new to the forum so I hope I don't violate any protocols but I have a G4m Power Mac, not a Quicksilver and not a MDD. Just a Graphite originally a 450 mhz with a built in zip drive . I need to quiet it down as it is inside my recording studio. I have built a box, open back, closeable front, all lined with aurolex foam but it hasn't helped much because all the noise seems to come from the back fan exhaust holes. I want to try out the silenX 120mm fan. Does anyone know if that will work in my unit? Will that change alone help enough? When I get down next to the rear of the machine it seems most of the noise comes from the lower holes which is the main exhaust. The power supply is up high. I also think I will remove the front speaker to let some extra air in unless someone thinks that is a bad idea. Does anyone know of any other mods? thanks for the anticipated help and commments. Yeah the Silenx Fans are AMAZING. I swapped out my 120mm Delta with the 120mm Silenx 70 cfm at only 18dlb. It is truely silent. I didn't mod the fan to run on the mobo so it runs full speed. And I can't hear it at all. And it spins much faster then the Loud stock Delta. Even cranked up full speed it's 1000 times less noise the the Delta running at low speed. With MUCH better airflow. The main problem I found is the Power supply fans. Like my post above, I'm trying to find some fans that are good enough to replace the stock fans. I found these:

They look like just what I'm after. The CFM is lower then the stock fans but the noise level is less then 30. With my Case mod i think I can keep my temps low near the psu and have a quite machine!

I have a MDD with a 360Watt PSU and a Panasonic Panaflo 120mm M1A fan. However, I do believe that the 'real noise' is coming out from the 'supposed to be improved' 360Watt PSU. What I have told that I shouldn't open up the PSU.
Meanwhile, I don't really like what the original owner did to the 1Ghz MDD.

Hi. I just discovered that a lot of my noise (G4 not MDD not
Quicksilver) is coming from the CPU fan. I discovered this when I was installing my brand new super duper silenX 120mm case fan. I really need to slow both these things down while I'm actually recording in my studio then I can spin them back to full speed at all other times. I am thinking about getting this unit: Silver Vantec Nexus Fan & Light Controller NXP-305-SL, 3.5" Drive Bay, w/ Blue Cold Cathode Lights. It controls 3 separate fans, letting you go from full Mac speed down to a slower quieter speed with the turn of a nob. All plug in, no soldering required. Obviously I don't care about the glowing lights. They have them at directron.com.
Oh, I went nuts and removed the front panel built-in speaker from the G4 then I took a 1/8 drill bit and drilled out bigger holes in the existing speaker holes to match the larger holes in the metal case frame inside just to allow some extra cool air to drift in.
Anybody have any thoughts about doing this?
Don
