Hey Guys,

Im planning to upgrade my Mac Mini. I wanted to know if the new Merom processors with the 800MHz FSB will work with the Intel Mac Minis?

No one really knows as it's all fun speculation. I highly doubt it as it appears the MBP and iMac will probably make the jump and Apple wants to give buyers a reason to justify the higher price of the MBP and iMac's.

My feeling is that the Mini's will make a jump to the Intel C2D but we shall see. I hope we hear something at the WWDC next month. I'm definitely buying either a Mini or a new iMac but will probably hold off for Leopard before I buy.

Not with the current model, no. They use a different socket (Socket P instead Socket M).

No, the chipset (945GM) in the Mac mini only supports a 667Mhz FSB.

P is right. The new Meroms use an entirely different socket so it won't work.

Intel Core 2 Duo:-
T7700(w/ FSB of 800MHz) - http://www.shopmagenta.com/product/M...ertid=shopname

T7600(w/ FSB of 667MHz) - http://www.shopmagenta.com/product/M...ertid=shopname

According to these sites, both the processors use the same socket i.e. - Socket 479 and for some reason the new T7700-2.4GHz is cheaper than the T7600-2.33GHz??

Different socket, same number of pins, absolutely incompatible. Socket P processors will have pins A1 and A2 removed, while the current Socket M has pins A1 and B1 removed.

IIRC they changed up the number of signal/power/ground pins, thus the need for a new, incompatible socket.

T7700 uses Socket P and T7600 uses Socket M. The sockets are not compatible.

Indeed the T7700 is less expensive then the T7600 currently. Of course it's rather likely not many more T7600 will be sold now.
