I know that I'm probably going to regret this, but I got tired of waiting for a graphics card update. I was hoping to get a MacPro with the new ATI X2900 or whatever is the next top gaming card from Apple, but I figured that when they do release it I'll just get it from Apple online. For now, I'll be happy with the Radeon X1900XT. I went with the Quad 3.0 if anyone is wondering.

Congrats. I too just got a new Mac Pro, I got the 2.66 because the Mac Geniuses at the local Mac Store said there was no discernible advantage gain for what i will be doing. Graphic design, retouching and digital painting. I'll wait to get another graphics card but I just bought 2 more gb of ram.

I wonder if Apple will be willing to meet the power supply requirements of the ATI X2900? Imagine the power requirements with a maxed out model and that ATI card!

Congratulations with your purchase !! About the ongoing discussion:
It's not the power consumption I'm worried about, it's the loud cooling that worries me. I for one am a ATi fan, but after the loud X1900XT in my PC, I'm thinking twice about high end ATI cards. The HD 2900XT isn't any more silent at all, it needs to dissipate even more heat. Since Apple is strong on the silent image of their equipment, I'm very curious about how they will manage this issue.
That leads me to another question: how come I've never read about any complaints about the X1900XT fan loudness in the Mac Pro. Are they downclocked ? Because the one I had went from 60 ° C to 80 ° C when in use, not overclocked in a VERY well ventilated case.

You should have nothing to regret. The x1900 is an outstanding graphics card. My Mac Pro has one, and I am not at all displeased. Also, as previously stated, you can always find an upgrade eventually. For now, the x1900 will do, besides its better than playing the waiting game all the time. Believe me, Ive done it too. lol

I have a MacPro with the x1900xt. The whole machine is really quiet so you won't have the same experience as before. The card is clocked down in the range of 25MHz or so. Nothing major. I still get 100+fps in WoW. You can clock it up with a utility if you install Windows on the machine.
