i just got a new dual 2.66 today and it is very very loud. my first guess is that because i did a applications and profile transfer with my old macbook pro that maybe the SMCfanControl app i have might have caused some fan preferences to be changed, or someting along those lines. i rebooted with the SMC fan to not auto boot, but still the fans seem to be flying. it is louder then i have ever heard before. not a bad sound just loud.

macpro 2.66 | 4GB | 7 TB
macbook pro 2.4i5 | 4GB | 500GB 7200rpm
technic 1210 M5G

Mine too, new Friday, is very, very quiet. Replace it under the 14 day grace period or call 1-800-SOS-APPL.

My Mac Pro had an extremely loud fan noise when I first got it. It was my graphics card which was not seated properly and I guess the bad connection made the fan on the graphics card go crazy. You should be able to look at the exterior where your graphics card is (where you attach your monitor). If the card looks obviously crooked, then I bet it's the graphics card.

I removed all the hard drives so that I could see the graphics card better, touched a metal part of the computer to remove any static I might be holding, and removed the card. I had a hell of a time getting it back in correctly. The problem was that the metal edge that is supposed to be flush with the outer edge of the case was bent (I forget if the part on the graphics card was bent or the part on the case). When the graphics card was seated properly it was fine. Do not push hard to insert the card or you could crack your logic board (mother board). BE PATIENT and try to see which part is bent.

My Mac Pro is not extremely loud, but it's far from silent. FAR from it. It's been working flawlessly for over 6 months though. Alot of people think their computer is silent because they are in a noisy environment. My environment is pretty much dead silent. The computer definitely makes a fair bit of noise. It's not as loud as the MDD G4's though. Keep in mind I have the X1900XT video card.

once you get the SMC fan control is seems the fan increases its revs just a bit.. at least for me
you eventually get use to it

currently mine fans are:
Hard Drive: 999rpm
Exhaust: 1099rpm
Power supply: 740 rpm
Cpu fan: 987rmp

using iStat

I think the reason some people say that their Mac Pros are not silent and some say it is super silent is the fact that some have an Nvidia card and others have an ATI card. I have an ATI card and I can definitely hear my Mac Pro, it isn't loud but I can hear the fan. Configurations make a big difference I mean most people that have the ATI card are trying to change the fan in efforts of making the card quieter.
