No alert sounds on G5

My G5 stoppd making all alert sounds and the audio for videos online is off also. I can play music in iTunes but all my default sounds and email alerts stopped working for some reason. I restarted my machine and checked in system preferences but everything looks fine. Any advice?

Go back to your Sound settings in System Preferences. There is a separate slider for Alert Volume. You can set it to silent yet still play sounds through iTunes.
