I just got an old PowerMac G4 500 (AGP Graphics) and I am wondering about a processor upgrade. I know that there are some third party upgrades from sonnet and a few others but I am wondering about taking processors out of other older powermacs. I have a friend that has a dual 450 with a dead motherboard, would it be possible to take that one and drop it in my powermac? If so what about faster ones than that? like dual 1Ghz??
Thanks
Matt

As far as I know, the 500MHz machines all had motherboards capable of supporting dual processors. So your friend's Dual 450 should work just fine.
Anything higher than Dual 500MHz would require hardware modification if it's coming from another Apple machine, like a Quicksilver. If you want a no fuss install you're gonna have to snag a third party upgrade.

Getting the Dual 450 upgrade seems like a no-brainer.
What are the specs of the rest of your system?

Its a single 500 with 768 mb of ram, and a couple 40 gig drives, and a Radeon 7000 pci for dual displays. (two OLD 17in crts). Ah the joy of being a super poor student :-) But the dual 450 should be a bit faster so I will have to go for that.
Thanks
Matt

Well I do have one other question, does anyone know where I can get a cheap pci ide controller? I have 2 320gb drive that I have sitting in a windows box that I never use (and the fans are SUPER loud so I leave it off most of the time) and it would be nice if I could stick them in the mac.
Thanks
Matt

These are pretty much the only IDE controllers for the Mac. And OWC has them for as cheap as you're gonna find them.

Alternatively, you can put the drives in a FireWire enclosure …

Or check ebay to save some money......look for a Sonnet Tempo.......I ran one in my B&W & my sawtooth for years notta problemo, just plug & play.....(should be around $25-35) And post a "WTB" in the marketplace forum too !
one note though, the older ide cards required you to initialize all drives attached to it before it would recognize them, so a solid back-up is in order if you go that route
