I have some basic questions for everyone. I got an iMac a few weeks ago, first mac ever had 3 PCs before this. There have been some compatibility uses for me and I just want to make sure its a common thing or maybe its me screwing up.
My operating system is Tiger and my web browser is safari.
1) I downloaded Yahoo messenger and it doesn't seem to have all the features. It won't allow me to play/stream from yahoo music. Is this common? If not is there a patch or something I can do to fix it?
2)When Safari, Itunes and Word are opened at the same time I get a laggy font cursor. Its like my computer will process 10-15 characters, pause and then process the next bit. So all my typing is choppy if I have the programs open.
3)Yahoo messenger used to have a chat, I can't access this chat at all on my Mac. I cant get it through messenger or the website link. Can I solve this problem.
4) My Safari explorer sometimes just prompts me to shutdown or close the program. It happens randomly and it is on safe sites.
Thanks for the input!

1, 3) Last I heard, yahoo messenger for Mac sucked and doesn't have that many fetures, I think Adium supports Yahoo, try that
2) how much RAM do you have?
4) Don't understand your situation, you mean the application unexpectedly quits?

2) 1 Gig Memory, I don't think I should have a problem...I thought that was slightly above standard now.
4) Yeah, it will promt me to close Safari.....says it encountered an error and it must close then it asks me to report it. I'd say its happens 1 time a week...if that. But I dont think it should happen at all. It happens on safe sits randomly like ESPN, CNN, Local news stations...etc. I can go on ESPN 100 times and it only happens once. Theres not pattern to it at all.
Thanks for the input above.

Which iMac do you have and what OS version are you running (10.4.x)? Make sure you have all the latest updates (Apple menu -> Software Update). Safari should not be unexpectedly quitting like that.

Since Word is not a native Intel app it's going to run slower and take up lots of memory. I've read turning off the automatic grammer checker helps a bit. One gig RAM is what I would consider a practical minimum. Any less would be inadequate and more would be better. You should be able to use Yahoo chat with Adium but it doesn't work Yahoo music streaming.

Try those same sites with Firefox as your browser. It's possible your browser problem could be something in Safari, in which case the sites will work fine with Firefox. If not, then it's because those sites use file formats that are not native to the Mac (quite a likely case from what I've heard about ESPN and the like). But Firefox should tell you what's not working, and you can find a plug in or add on that would fix the problem.

Well it happens all the time on my eMac 1.25ghz as well as my sisters 600mhz Flower Power IMac and my friends G5 Imac. It happens after useing it for a long time, like a half hour or so without a break. All computers are running 10.4.9, I was guessing it was going to be fixed in the next version of 10.4 and/or 10.5.

Ans. Get adium and it will solve your problem but i am not sure whther adiums allows you to play or stream from yahoo music.
2)When Safari, Itunes and Word are opened at the same time I get a laggy font cursor. Its like my computer will process 10-15 characters, pause and then process the next bit. So all my typing is choppy if I have the programs open.
Ans. I believe you have to buy a new piece of ram to boost your mac speed.

Ans. Not sure about this as i am nt a yahoo user though. sorry.
4) My Safari explorer sometimes just prompts me to shutdown or close the program. It happens randomly and it is on safe sites.
Ans. Hmm it happens to me too but it only happens like 1 to twice every other mths.
Thanks for the input!
Ans. Welcome

Make sure you go into Word Preferences and TURN OFF LIVE GRAMMAR CHECKING.
The ****ers at Microsoft have decided that a function ain't a function if it ain't turned on by default, despite the fact that in eighteen years of computing, I have NEVER met a person who needed live grammar check let alone WANTED it, EVEN IF it were to work properly, which OF COURSE Microsoft's version does NOT. This is one company product policy that has probably done more for their security nightmare than any other, btw.
Anyway switch off that ****-ass ****, and the lag will become *noticeably* better immediately.
Also, make sure you have at least 1GB of RAM installed.
