Hi there

I've been having the following problems with my dual 2.5 G5 for around 6 months.

I'm going to make it short.

Problems:

1- It goes to sleep when I'm working on music or video related programs. It makes a click noise when awakes after a mouse movement. The energy
saver and sleep settings are set to "never".

2- Sometimes, when restarting or turning on the G5, I can hear the chime and fan noises but the display is black and a red light is on inside the Mac, behind the processors or the fan (midway inside the box).

3- Temperature monitor shows peaks over 100 degrees on processor B.

The G5 is in an Apple store after a quick trip to a service provider where I've got the info that they would change the logic board to solve the issue. Somebody fixed just changing the video card but it seems that Apple choose the easy fix (and expensive for out of warranty users).

It seems to be a common problem but Apple doesn't recognizes as such. I will strongly complain about this issue. Do you have any ideas for me?
Please, post if you had the same problem and the solution so that I can take this to the Apple Store and fight my case.

Jose

Update: I took my G5 back home (I cannot afford repair it at Apple prices) and as soon as I plug it I get the white power light on and I cannot turn the Mac on or off. So, I took a half broken Mac to Apple and they gave a full broken one, thanks guys.

That's helpful, dude.

To the OP, you can probably turn up a used motherboard online, but installing one in a G5 is not a trivial matter. You've got to tune all the temperature controls, which most likely takes software not generally available to the public. Get a quote from an independent (Apple certified) repair shop, if the thing's out of warranty.

You might explore the settings in the power management utility called pmset. I posted some tips on using this here:
