I just saw macsales selling ram up to 32gb for the mac pro. I thought the mac pro can only max out at 16gb. Can the mac pro handle 32gb?

At the point when the machines were released, the largest available module was 2 gb, so with 8 banks, that's 16 max. Apparently, now there's 4 gb modules available. I have no idea whether a Mac Pro would recognize all 32 gb, but if OWC says it works, I'd figure it to be true, as generally, they seem to know what they're talking about, there. Give 'em a call and ask -- they actually answer the phones there (one of the reasons I buy from them).

They wouldn't be selling it if it didn't work. Like chris v said don't be afraid to call. They have helped me with all my issues.

However, for 99.999 % of the people, 32 GB RAM is pure overkill. Buy RAM only as needed -- and I haven't heard of anyone on these forums who has had a need of that much RAM.

4GB modules have been available since at least the Xserve launch, and probably the Mac Pro launch.
The chipset in the Mac Pro supports them, but Apple may have crippled it in firmware (as they did with the Core Duo Macs) to a lower ceiling.
