Dear members,
I tried to switch on my G5 this morning. Unfortunately, it won't start up at all and I can smell smoke in the enclosure.
As my guarantee had expired, I figure out that replacing the power supply by myself would be cheaper. I have tried to find a web-page where instructions to unmount the power supply could be explained. I can't find anything...
Do you know by any chance how to proceed please?
Thank you.
I'm so confused

Apple doesn't sell replacement parts to mere mortals. Hence even if you manage to get the old PSU out, you don't have a new one to replace it with.
The only alternative is to go to a certified Apple Service Center and have it replaced. Sorry.

Hello,
I've been able to repair my faulty power supply on my own. Thanks to a detailed web-page, I disassemblied the computer, down to the power supply, which I brought to a tv-repair shop. They replaced an electronic part successfully.
Maybe that could help other members, and avoid them a costly replacement solution !
Here's the link to the dissambly procedure.

There is a known problem with g5 liquid cooling systems. they can spring a leak and pour a glycol and water mixture down upon the power supply. I would not advise the attempt to replace the power supply alone. though it is most surely fried it is the cooling system that is at fault. to access the cooling system you must pry out a small plastic cap that is in a plastic sleeve that holds the g5 shroud in place then you need a cup hook to pull out the sleeve. then the shroud can be slid forward and removed. there are about 2 dozen other steps to go through including removing your video card so that you can remove the fan assembly to get to the power supply that is the entire bottom of the case, screws inside and out. If your are a power mac owner with a liquid cooled system I suggest you check for a glycol leak weekly to make sure you don't fry the processors and the power supply. good luck
