hi

I have an iMac G4 with a faulty hard drive and was wondering what type of hard drive these take?

is it IDE? 40 pin? because I heard somewhere these take laptop harddrives

any ideas anyone?

It's in there pretty deep, but the iMac G4 has a 3.5" PATA (Parallel ATA-100) IDE drive. Yep, that's a desktop form-factor drive, not a 2.5" notebook.

Oh, and keep in mind the drive height so that don't replace it with one that is physically too tall.

Just regular desktop ATA size should be fine. I don't think there are different heights (that I'm aware of).

Remember, if you're doing this yourself, you need thermal paste, torx screwdrivers (10 and 15 I think)... and maybe some alcohol swabs to clean off the OLD thermal paste.
