Hello, and help!
My eMac: 700Mhz G4, 256MD ram, OS X 10.3.9
Problem: freezing up more and more- the rainbow pinwheel goes into a perpetual wait cycle.
This has happened in Safari, the iCab browser, Text Edit, and even the Finder window.
When this happens, I can still open and use items in the Dock, but I cannot close the affected app.
Even Force Quit (or Restart, for the Finder) does not stop the Rainbow Wheel of Doom...
I cannot even restart or shut down the machine from the Apple menu...I have to resort to the "Kill Switch" on my surge protector, which I am lothe to do, as this wipes out my unsaved data, of course.
Do I need more RAM (please let it be something that simple!) I have had this eMac for 3 months, and it has performed smoothly, up until about 2 weeks ago. I dont think I have done anything unusual, or have been to too many nefarious web sites...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Could be numerous things... probably not RAM... Could be corrupted system, dying hard drive, logic board, etc. I would take it into a service provider and see what they think. And Apple Store if you have one near by.

For your data, you can try target disk mode if you have another Mac. Basically, when the eMac is off... turn it on while holding down the letter "T". If successful, you will get a "Y" looking logo on your screen. Connect a firewire cable from the eMac to another Mac and the eMac will show up on the desktop as an external hard drive. You can then pull your data off it.

Most likely the hard drive.

Have you tried Disk Utility to repair the directory and repair permissions? Running Onyx to clean out system and font caches? It could be a dying hard drive, it could be a whole lot of something else. How is your backup?

Hmmm... I was hoping it was something simple... still, I do have all the system and install discs, If it comes to needing a new HD.
I will use the Superdrive (yes, this particular eMac was previously upgraded with one!) to back up my files on DVD. I'll try running Tech Tool Pro 4 on the HD.
Thank you all for your input- I'll let you know the results.

Yup, you guys we're right- TechTool found 6 bad spots on the HD. It's a Maxtor, I suppose it is the original drive (40GB).
I've heard good things about Maxtor. Are there brands any of you would recommend?
Thanks again.

Hi again,
It's been several months, and not a single crash since I ran the full Tech Tool repair routine.
Great app- I highly recommend it!
