hello,
i'm having an ongoing issue with my imac g5 1.8, the model before the isight camera was installed.

my hard-drive had crashed, so i had it replaced. I formated it with zero erased and did a full fresh install of osx from my discs. And did all updates.
I am getting black boxes that cover button icons, or icon graphics wont show up. This is happening on all programs. This problem started before with my old hard drive and still continues with my new hard drive.

black box over spotlight icon

.mail buttons

Safari stop/reload button & add bookmark button dont show up at all. but if i click the empty space they work

search buttons & results

All my options in Universal Access are turned off. I am also having problems with my clock in the toolbar, After reboots its never there I have to go back into system preferences and enable it. I will even Lock the preferences.

And my ical application will not even load up, it just crashes. I installed everything from both of my install discs.

If anyone has any idea what this could be I would be so grateful. I cant find anything online. And my computer is almost two years old

That's very strange. Does it occur if you boot from another drive or the install disc? My first thought was a GPU problem, but the problem is too uniform across the screen. You probably will want to run the Apple Hardware Test CD.

I would expect it's a GPU problem.

Could be the GPU problems that plauged the first gens of iMac G5s.

I recently had similar problems with my G5 iMac of about the same vintage and it turned out to be a faulty logic card which Apple replaced free under an extended warranty scheme. Theres a technical paper on the Apple site describing the problem and a list of serial numbers which help you identify if you are the lucky owner of such a machine.
Good luck

Get your serial number from the bottom of your iMac and the go to the Apple web site under support. Look for the warrant extension section for the G5 iMac's. If your iMac serial number is in this range for 1st generaton iMacs, you probably have a faulty power supply and it may have caused damage to the logic board. If you have an Apple Store near by, call and take it in. If you deal with an authorized reseller, check to see if they are an authorized repair center for Apple. If none of these avaiable, call Apple. Hope this helps.
