had my imac for a week now and learning lots of new stuff but mystified by the keychain. I get asked for my password often and at the oddest times. Is this usual?

I stepped away for dinner came back to use safari and it asked me for my system password? Other times a message will come saying that since my system was idle for a time my password in needed to continue. Security is nice but this seems a bit overkill that thruout the day 4-7 times I've got to do this.

I think you have enabled to enter the system password if you wake or the screen saver is closed... System Preference --> Security check there what is enabled

wish it were that easy. Already had looked in that area. Today when I turned on imac and opened Safari I got the popup asking for my password. A mystery of sorts

try creating a different user account and see if the problem follows you. safari does the same thing to me on my imac (g4), but only in an account i don't use very often.
imac g3 600
imac g4 800 superdrive
ibook 466

I think I got it figured. Open Keychain>Edit>Change settings for keychain login

I had it set to activate for every 5 minutes or if system goes to sleep.
