Quick question guys:

I can get a great deal on an old iMac G4. I plan on giving this computer to my 5 year old son, for him to go on his educational websites. Does the iMac G4 support core image / quartz extreme? I want to give him my old iSight and he likes to use Photo Booth. Thanks everyone.

Probably depends on which iMac G4 it is and how much VRAM it has. Can you check?

Thanks Steve,

I think it is only the 15" model, with the 700mhz PPC processor. The graphic card listed is the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM (AGP 2X support).

Apple - Mac OS X - Quartz Extreme
Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video GPUs: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX and later, or any AGP-based ATI RADEON GPU. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.
I think you're in luck.

In Tiger:
Apple menu > About This Mac
click 'More Info' button to launch System Profiler
look at Graphics/Displays

It will tell you if Core Image and Quartz Extreme are supported.
The GeForce 2MX supports Quartz Extreme, but not Core Image. Core Image runs in software on older video cards.
