Steve says that glossy is what consumers want, so I doubt it'll change anytime soon.

just seems unlikely.
as much as i want it (and won't buy an imac, as planned, without a matte screen), i am not holding my breath.

Not at all likely, just as a matte LCD for the MB is extremely unlikely.
Apple has undoubtedly done loads of market research and surveys, and the market segment that they're targeting for the iMac and MB is mostly young and into entertainment, which shows up exceeding well on glossy.

About as likely as getting a decent GPU.

From what I heard about Steve Jobs' leadership style, I doubt that Apple will release a non-glossy version of the 2007 iMac. That is why I have bought a 2006 iMac instead. Maybe it is a bit slower, but the matte screen pleases my eyes.
Apple may release both glossy and matte versions in fall 2008 if it realizes that giving consumers a choice would increase its sales and profit! However it may not. Without matte screen on iMac, Apple may give serious graphic designers and photographers no choices but to buy the expensive Mac Pro. Brilliant strategy, isn't it?!!

I suppose when the MacBook gets one the ibook will get one.
If memory serves me, similar complaints and angst was brought up on the MacBook, and low and behold, shortly after that Apple provided a glossy screen option for MacBook Pros and people were choosing them I think the market (along with economic factors) are driving this decision. that being the case its highly unlikely that we'll ever see a matte display for the imac.

Apple is not one to do something that would look like admission of being wrong. Not only that, but this form factor would not work with that change. The sceen is flush, an Apple will want to keep it that way.

You're assuming they are wrong. People like the glossy screen, normal non-professionals seem to. While I myself don't like glossy and would have liked to see a matte display option that doesn't mean apple is wrong.
Try to find pc a laptop that does not use glossy, hard to find and generally more expensive. Market conditions are driving the move to glossy, as I said partly cost of the glossy panel but also the wow factor. People look at the glossy and look at the matte, and the images on the glossy pop, so you know which one they'll get. So is that a mistake - I don't think so. Offering a choice on the other hand for those who don't like the glossy would have been nice.
Where they are wrong it seems it putting an inferior GPU into the computer

That's only because most people are ****ing idiots, who think that a cheaper shittier screen is actually a good thing. It's all marketing. Instead of 'lacking the anti glare coating', it's marketed as a 'glossy' feature. So something that is normally bad, is reworded so it sounds like an option.

Well I know of some graphic designers who know a thing or two about computers opted for a glossy screen for the MacBook Pro. Are they ****ing idiots? Once you calibrate the monitor its fine.

It's not happening. If you want matte, go for the old ones. The only difference really is processor speed.

It's a design problem. The glossy glass surface is part of the design, and to have a matte screen option, Apple would have to change the design. Maybe they will do it. Production is highly automated, so it can't be so hard to produce two slightly different models.
It would be great if you could buy either the white iMac or the glossy iMac next to each other. But, as marketing is today, it is always to have something new, not growing a stock of classic designs a customer can choose from.
More options to choose from, that's what I'd wish.

Just wanted to add my comments about the new glossy iMacs. I went to my local Apple store specifically to see what all the discussion is about. I really like the new design. The new keyboard is "different" and may taking a bit getting used to. But, no big deal.
But the glossy screen is a big deal--not good, just big. I know there seems to be two extreme camps--those who love it, those who hate it. I'm in the latter camp. It is like looking into a mirror. The reflection is distracting and makes it difficult to see. I can imagine that it will create eye strain after a while. I can't imagine myself sitting for hours in front of the computer moving from side to side trying to see what's on the screen. I would think that Steve Jobs would be concerned about making a computer that is more enjoyable to use, rather than more frustrating.
Obviously, this new version is aimed at consumers. There is no question that the colors are more vibrant, more intense. Watching a DVD on this computer would probably be a fantastic experience. But, if I by a Mac, I'm buying a computer not a TV! I have one of the original "snowball" G4's. I am seriously looking to replace it. This new iMac is not what I have been waiting for. I think it's a disappointment, a step backward. I can only hope that Apple will review this situation and give us options. But, at least in the near future, that doesn't seem likely.
