Is it possible to connect the latest version of the imac to a 30" apple monitor ?

No.
The 30" Cinema Display requires a dual-link DVI output, while the iMac only has regular DVI.
It only supports external resolutions up to 1920 by 1200.

which is stupid seeing how the macbook pros were able to drive a 30" lcd from the very first rev, and the imac and mbp had the same gpu (even though the mbp was the mobile unit)

Not exactly correct. True, you can't get the maximum resolution of the display, but there's no physical reason why you can't connect the 30" display and still get 1920x1200 on it.

Unlike other 30" displays on the market (Dell comes to mind), the 30" ACD only supports native (2560x1600) and quarter-native (1280x800)
