I just received a new 24" iMac, with the 2.8GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. I immediatly noticed that it locks up when I open Aperture. More precisely, when I try to do anything with Aperture, like select a new image to view, or crop.

Is having only 1GB of RAM causing the problem? I have more RAM on order, but in the meantime I'd like to know if this is serious.

How long does it lock up for? What else do you have running at the time?

It locks up indefinitely. But never crashes. Sometimes it recovers long enough to click on another image, only to have it lock up again. When it's frozen I can't do anything else on the computer. The only way I can get the system to work again is wait long enough to quit Aperture, or SSH in and kill the process.

I just swapped memory from my MacBook into the IMac, so it now has 2 x 1GB chips. For a lttle while it seemed to be working better, but then froze again. So far, I've only noticed this problem when edit RAW files, but not with JPEGs or largeish (50mb) TIFFs.

The only other programs running were iTunes and iChat. I turned them off, and it still froze.

Jay SK, this sounds like a very specific software problem. I recommend you to go to one of the Aperture forums.

Any of these new photography software has some bugs, so it might not be your computer.

I use Lightroom, and Lightroom sometimes slows down, and speeds up again. So it might be something similar.

Did you do the latest upgrade?

Google aperture forums. There will be many helpful souls to answer this.
