I've always been buying new updated hardware as I believe that with technology you go forward, not backward. I am switching from Windows and was already to buy the new 24-inch iMac. I love all-in-one form factor because I dislike clutter. But as it stands, I cannot tolerate the glare on the new iMac screen and seriously considering buying the previous iMac (all white). Either that or the new Mac Mini and 23" ADC, but here, we're talking cables. I need opinions as to this "going backward" makes any sense. Thanks all.

You buy what fits your needs and if the glossy screen doesn't then fit go for the prior revision.

Old or new, you gotta like what you buy. You will pay less for an older model but run the risk of components failing out of warranty. It is going to end up being a personal choice, good luck!

I can think of a few people around here who prefer the last model iMac to the new one. The screen is one of the big reasons. Not crazy at all.

I agree, my friend just made the switch this weekend. His wife got him a G5 iMac for his B-day. I know she wanted to get him a newer model but there just was not enough money in their budget for it. She ask me and I was able to find a really good deal on criagslist for a used G5 with all the bells and whistles. It can not keep up with the Core Duo's but it ran CS3 with no problem. It will fit his needs and introduce him to the Mac world.

Well....so far, no negative or discouragement from going with the old iMac. Are there any known issues with it I should know about? fan noise, hummmming, heat, etc.? Many thanks!

The lowest new unit I found is from Provantage for $1610. I thought old models are always discounted, apparently not in this case.

Macs tend to keep their resale value unlike PCs. Check the Apple Refurbished store for good deals.

No issues, no fan noise, no humming. My 24" iMac is a fantastic machine, and what's better is that even with a SLIGHTLY slower processor, it kicks the new one to the curb in most games. The videocard in the white 24" iMac's was a LOT better than the new one.

A refurbished 24" iMac (white) is $1449 at the Apple Store. However, it comes with a 7300GT. You want to look for one with a 7600GT for future-proofing purposes and games. Also, 7600GT > 2600PRO

Actually, I think it is very sensible of you to be buying what you need rather than buying the latest of the latest for the sake of ... well ... buying the latest.

I bought an old one and couldn't be happier. It doesn't make ANY noise.

Bought a white 24" just last week for the same reasons and couldn't be happier, especially coming from a 12" Rev B powerbook. I just didn't like the reflections in the glass overlay but I see how some people don't mind or notice.
