One of the work macs, an iMac G5 (non iSight), has started to shut itself down. It happens several times a day, and at any time, sometimes when in use, sometimes when it has been left.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Bad power supply? Overheating due to fan problems?

Have you tried AHT to see if it comes up with a specific error code?

Havent tried AHT (not my machine and system disks are kept safe!), but the top edge of the casing does seem hot to the touch (no idea whether this is normal for an iMac).

Known power supply issue with some G5 iMac's. My GF has a RevB 20" 2.0. It's serial number was covered under the recall and the Apple store in Portland replaced it for free.

Check the Apple Knowledgebase. I think it has affected serial numbers listed or provides lookup.

That's funny... I've had my iMac G5 for two and half years, and it just started having this exact problem too. It's already had two hard drives die. Luckily, it's still covered under the APP. I ran Apple Hardware Test three times... twice the computer shut off before the test could be completed, but the third time it actually finished, but reported no errors. Heh.

Upon further investigation on the Apple K-Base, it seems to be covered under this:

Apple - Support - iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Power Supply Issues

My system is definately shutting down intermittently, and it has an EMC number of 2056.

Time to take this thing in again, I guess...

20" imac G5 about 2.5 years old again, started randomly shutting down last week- sometimes lasts couple of hours, sometimes doesn't even get to completely start up...
AHT quick one showed no probs, the slow one never finished, machine reset itself 13 mins into it- everything ok till then...
