Hi,

I am a graphic designer currently working on a measly Mac mini and its lack of performance is driving me insane! I am looking to ditch the machine and replace it with a spanking new one. I feel tempted buying the new iMac (24in 2.4Ghz 1GB 320GB). Though I am a bit worried that I might be making a mistake again and buy a machine which doesn’t really handle my work. I don’t work that much with large files but need a computer quick enough to handle medium sized files (5-30mb) and at the same time jump between applications quickly, as I do this an awful lot. How does the iMac (24in 2.4Ghz 1GB 320GB) compare to lets say the Mac Pro (Quad 2.6 1GB 250GB)? Is there a significant difference?!

Thanks,
Karl

I have a dual 1.8 processor Power Mac which I have used extensively with Creative Suite CS2 and Lightroom…as magazine editor, graphic designer, and avid photographer…both for work and as a hobby. When the new iMac was released, I immediately went to my local Apple Store to compare it with a new Mac Pro, since I wanted to move to CS3, and also felt it was time for me to make the move to Intel. Which to buy…iMac or Mac Pro?

At the store I compared the new iMac 24” with 4 meg ram, to a dual 2.66 Mac Pro also with 4 meg Ram, using PS CS3 to apply various filters to images with sizes up to 50 MB. While the Mac Pro certainly has much more flexibility in terms of expansion, and ultimate processing capacity and speed, I was impressed by how little difference there was in terms of processing speed between the two, doing things which I do daily in my work.

I thus decided to buy the new iMac 24-inch, 2.8 and max it out with 4 meg ram. With the bucks I saved by not buying a Mac Pro ($700 with my required Mac Pro configuration) I can get the 4 meg ram, a new external hard drive…and now a new iPod Touch!
