Wired vs. Wireless Keyboard

Does anyone understand the logic behind the fact that Apple chose not to put a number keypad on the Wireless version of their new keyboard, but they did put one on the wired version? Why would they do that? I was all set to buy the new keyboard but without a number pad the deals off.
Oh Apple...

Maybe because there's totally no point at all in a wireless keyboard, so they thought that making even more useless wouldn't make any difference?

or maybe, for some of us, it's a nice option.
i mostly LOVE the idea of a letter-based keyboard that i can CENTER under my monitor.
having less cables, and more deskspace, is nice as well.
am waiting, not patiently, for my wireless keyboard to ship (oct2).

Since my family got our first computer in 1996 (PowerMac G3), I’ve been waiting for somebody to make a non-extended keyboard, because I hate how you have to shove it off to the left to make room for a right-hand mouse.
This is like the perfect keyboard as far as I’m concerned. No extended frou-frou, MacBook-style keyes, wireless… everything I’ve always wanted in a keyboard.

Because many people who need a wireless keyboard are people who use it on their laps, on a coffee table, on a couch, for their living room media PC, etc. Those people don't need a numeric pad. If you use a Mac professionally at a desk, you'll be doing just fine with the wired keyboard anyway. And for the eternally unsatisfied, there are more than enough alternatives to Apple keyboards. There are tons of wireless keyboards with numeric pads that work just fine on a Mac. Several of my colleagues here at work use Logitech rf keyboards (that all come with numeric pads) with their PMs and MPs and they all seem very happy.
I use a BT keyboard on the couch to control my Mac mini which I hooked up to my movie projector and stereo system. I always felt Apple's BT keyboard was too wide and too heavy for that kind of use. I couldn't be happier about the new BT keyboard. I'll be glad to get rid of the old Apple BT keyboard.

That's what The Steve said it is for.
Do you have one Simon? How is it? Have the configuration bugs been sorted out yet? I want one so I can put my MBP on my bedside table and keep typing on my lap.

On order. It won't ship for another while though. I hope it's nice. I can't wait to get rid of the old BT keyboard. The more I look at it, the more I think it's too bulky for my couch use.

Ah I thought they were in retail stores already. Is the software bugs the reason for the delay?

Just got my wireless keyboard today and I really like it. For one, I can actually use that keyboard shelf under my desk. Unlike some of the die hard mac users here, I don't really make much use of the number pad, and since I'm new to the whole mac-world, the omision of the apple key or the replacement command icon makes no real difference to me. The arrow keys are a little tiny for my stubby fingers. They basically cut those arrow keys in half!
Be warned, it takes three AA batteries just like that flashlight you own. So...you add the two in my wireless mouse, and now three in the keyboard and I'm going to need virtually a whole package. Since my wireless mouse and imac arrived in mid-August, my mouse is still at full power! Hopefully the keyboard batt power will last as long.
Now I can Full Tilt Poker from my couch (maybe 10ft away) and poker away on my 24" screen of glory. ALL IN BABY!!!!

Gah. I never really use the number pad, but I use the page up/page down/home/end keys a lot. So I ended up with a wired keyboard. I really want a bluetooth one to reduce my cable clutter (I have one of the previous Bluetooth keyboards, and it's too bulky and thick and I like the Scrabble keys more).

I rarely use it and I'm glad Apple didn't include the Number Keys. Their new Keyboard is amazing/very comfortable to use, it's light weight and I think the Wireless is perfect fit. I'm just waiting for Apple Store in Yorkdale to get it in!

got mine! just arrived fedex, paired it, and am using it now.
some first thoughts:
it seems puny (funny, i wanted it small);
it's fast, connects fast, very responsive.
am now able to CENTER the keyboard with my screen (one of the things i wanted); and can have my mouse closer.
2 last things:
moving far from my desk & working with this from my lap is a kick...(altho i prob won't do that much);
and i have to get used to how small this is...makes me laugh at the moment...

Mine will arrive on Monday (at least according to the FedEx website).
I'm not particularly tall, so I don't have long arms, and having the alpha keys centered on my monitor puts the mouse too far away to be comfortable to use. I was pretty happy eons ago when Apple was shipping the short first gen iMac/Yosemite USB keyboards without the middle column of home/end/pg up/pg down/arrow keys. I'd still be using it, but the key action feels like crap on the two that I have and they're not particularly OS X friendly (no volume, eject, etc).
I don't do too much heavy number crunching, so hopefully I won't miss the numeric keypad.

several days later and i am completely comfortable with the wireless keyboard, and loving it.
when i pick it up and move back from the monitor, my friends are amazed (NOT the reason to own one tho... )

I was at the mall yesterday and stopped into the Apple Store. I didn't even know the keyboards were out yet but when I saw it on the shelf I grabbed one. Man is it tiny!, at first it looked kind of strange on my desk but I really do like it. I guess Apple decided to leave off the number pad so it could be portable. It would easily fit into a laptop case. I'm looking at it now and I still think it looks sort of funny being so small. I could also easily use it on my lap if my Mac was connected to a TV.

I think they should have a wireless version with number pad... I mean, would it be so hard. Probably with the next iteration of mice and keyboards, bluetooth will be standard anyway.

Sorta off topic but also related querstion regarding bluetooth mouse and kybrd:
I leave my imac running all the time (I know you really shouldn't but...) and I just power off my mouse and kybrd at nightor when I go to work during the day. When I power up my mouse and kybrd, my kybrd is active almost right away, while my mouse takes almost 30 sec to be recognized. What gives? Is this normal? My battery levels on both are relatively the same - both at full power, but I've had my mouse since it was shipped while my kybrd showed up at a later date. Anyone else notice this issue?

There's nothing wrong with letting your iMac run 24/7. It was designed to be used. Use it!

My BT mouse and KB are available about 2s after I turn them on. Have you tried repairing the BT mouse?

He meant re-pairing, not actually "repairing," taking the mouse apart and fixing it, in case you didn't know

That's good, cause I was just about to go digging around for my little screwdrivers
Ok then, under the bluetooth tab of system preferences, do I try "delete" or "disconnect?" I just tried adding both my kybrd and mouse to "favorites" maybe this will help...

Unfortunately, not.

I wonder how far the signals of a wireless keyboard go.
Can they be picked up by someone else?
Since I read - on some other thread - about "wardriving" (picking up other people's computer signals, and stealing info), I really wonder if it is safe to use a wireless keyboard.
After all, it could work like a keystroke logger for a malicious party.

Good point! My wired keyboard is ruining my posture, because in order to have it centered and have the mouse at an optimal distance, I have to rotate my keyboard slighly counter-clockwise and type a bit sideway, with the right arm typing further toward the computer than the left...
