My "new" imac 20" Core Duo 2 GHz is making a small little "cluck" noise just about every second. it is being heard mostly out of the air vent above the power cord hole, and if I cover up the hole, it gets even quieter. It is something I can easily live with, but when the room is silent, it gets a little annoying, and I'd like to fix it if I can.

I have heard that hard drives give clicking noises just before they die.

Have you everything backed up?

You can use Disc Warrior to check the physcial health of your hard drive. (I'm not sure if the apple hardware test can help here).

According to OnyX, the SMART status is just dandy... I do have a backup, though.

Exactly where is the HD located in the iMac Core Duo? that may help me figure out if it is coming fomr the HD or not.

SMART status is turning out to be not quite as useful as was thought a few years ago. It might yet be the HD.

You can see a disassembly of the first Intel iMacs here. The HD is more or less in the center back, so I think that your Veltliner's guess may be all too accurate.

The thing is though is that it is about one click every two seconds, which would lead me to believe it's a fan for 3 reasons:

A) The only other thing that spins is the hard drive. If it were the hard drive, the clicks would probably be a lot faster, and wouldn't be so regular, because a hard drive speed varies depending on what the user is doing.

B) The back feels a little hot, adding to the theory that it could be a malfunctioning fan spinning slowly and catching on something.

C) That thing right under the HD is a fan, right? So that would lead me to believe that is the thing that is clicking.

The fact is, fans and the HD are the only 2 things that spin in the iMac, right?

Anyway, I'm taking it to a Genius Bar soon, and we'll see then. They look at stuff without Applecare, right?

I took it there, see the thread "I'm ticked off" for the result.
