Last time I knew what I was doing with RAM, it was before I discovered ramseeker.com where they just tell you what ram you need. I knew that my pismo needed PC100 ram, but PC133 was OK.

Problem is, now there's PC6400 or some other ungodly number, and there's also SDRAM and DDR2 ram and who knows how many other variables.

I want to know again, what higher values are compatible with what lower values. Why? Well I have to get some RAM for some powermacs at work (also I wouldn't mind a few more megs for my pismo). One is a quicksilver with PC133 ram, and one is a MDD with PC2700 ram, and the actual proper spec ram on those is like 2-4 times as expensive as the higher spec ram, you know the kind that is still in production somewhere.

So I need to be re-educated as to what params I can over-shoot on. I tried google but got nowhere. Little help?

Umm. . . Are you asking when it's permissible to buy RAM that goes beyond the minimum required for your computer?

I think the answer you want is, you basically have to say within what your model requires, although you can get faster RAM than required as long as it's the same type of RAM. For example, early low-end G5s required DDR333/PC2700, while the higher end G5s required DDR400/PC3200. You could put PC3200 in the G5s that only required PC2700, but you could not put PC2700 in the G5s that required PC3200.

But can you put DDR ram in an SDRAM computer? Can you put ECC FB ram in a pre-ECC or pre-FB ram computer? Is there any property of ram where new ones can't be used in old computers, and if so what are they?

No. It has to be the proper type required by the machine. Single data rate RAM (PC100, PC133) is for G3s and many G4s. DDR is for later G4s and early G5s. DDR2 is for later G5s and Mactels. That's what I meant when I said it has to be the same type of RAM, but it can be faster than necessary within that type. FB and EEC are kinds of error correcting circuitry that should only be installed if the computer's specifications mention it; otherwise, don't bother unless you don't have a choice, in which case the RAM may work fine and may not.
