Please lend me a helping hand!

I tried using Toast Titanium to burn a disc and I got the following error: Unable to burn Mac OS error = -39. Before you think I posted this in the wrong section please read on...

I used the disc utility and clicked on the optical drive and brought up the info tab and it states:

Name : MATSHITADVD-R UJ-85J
Type : Disk
Disk Identifier : disk1
Media Name : MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J Media
Media Type : DVDROM
Connection Bus : ATA
Connection Type : Internal
Connection ID : Device 0
Device Tree : /PCI0/PATA@1F,1/PRID@0/@0:0
Locked : Yes
Writable : No
Ejectable : Yes
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
DVDROM : Yes
Erasical Optical Media : Yes
Optical Media Type : DVD+RW
Device Type : CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
Location : Internal
Total Capacity : 4.4 GB (4,700,372,992 Bytes)
S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
Disk Number : 1

Why am I locked and not writeable. How do I clear this?

How many different discs have you put in the drive, and do you get the same indications with all of them? You see, what Disk Utility is referring to is the media, NOT the drive. The empty drive won't even show up in DU. I just slipped a brand new, unwritten CD-R in my drive (same model) and got equivalent information, including that it's locked. Go to System Profiler and see what it says under Disc Burning. I'll bet it says that just about every format there is is supported.

Your burning problem isn't related to what the Information bit in Disk Utility said. What it is related to, I'm not sure...but it's not the drive.

Here's what system profiler says:

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J:

Firmware Revision: FM0S
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media:
Media Type: DVD+RW
Blank: Yes
Erasable: Yes
Overwritable: Yes
Appendable: Yes

So from this I assume my drive is okay? I've put in two blank dvds ( "+RW" and "-RW") and tried burning but both formats came up with same error message. What else can I try to troubleshoot?
