when the power mac desktop turns on it has this annoying sound...can this be turned off?

How is the chime "annoying"? If you set the volume o mute before you shut down, you won't hear the sound on startup. Unless I'm completely missing the point.

Why do you turn the computer off? Mine is never off unless I'm on vacation or something - it's just in sleep mode.

what if the computer is in a bedroom and the significant other is sleeping and you wanna turn it on without any real noise? I dont even see why the noise is there. There is a power light anyway ...

Turn the speakers off I use StartUp Sound on my Mac and it works perfectly.
