She's in the Bay Area and I'm in Arizona so I'm going off her explanation of it.. but in a nutshell, it seems that when the computer finally puts itself to sleep, it goes into some sort of deep sleep and the fans kick on and it freezes up. The same thing was happening to my old Dual G5 for a while when I added a USB card and a couple of USB items on it.. it appears the USB card didn't support deep sleep and caused the OS to crash and default the computer to safe mode when the fans kick on max to protect it from over heat. In the case of my moms' iMac, there is no USB card, or any new devices.. it's just a blue tooth keyboard/mouse, and USB Epson printer attached to it.

Any ideas on how to fix it? I'm going to try to do a disk repair on it tomorrow with her over the phone, but I can't think of what else to try.

Maybe there are some known issues with the iMac G5... it's one of the earlier generation models.

When you say "finally puts itself to sleep" is there a problem putting it to sleep? I presume you have shut down and restarted? Have you asked her to create a new user account to test that?

I didn't mean it to sound like that.. Basically it goes to sleep as it should, but when it does.. you can't wake it. the fans kick on, and it won't wake. You have to shut it down and then restart it as if it was sitting cold.

We can try the new account if the disk repair doesn't work.

Unplug any USB devices except mouse & keyboard and test again.

Ok, it's just the same old Epson 780 printer plugged from way back when... but we'll give it a shot!
