My 7-year-old DP450, running 10.3.9, won't update to 10.4. It looks to be installing fine, but then says "Installation Failed. Please try again." I tried again and same. This has just become seriouser because my new iPod requires 10.4.8. Has my G4 finally met his end? It's still got life in it; it'd be a shame to scrap it now.

Thoughts? Thanks much.

A PowerMac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet)? Besides simply upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.8, you'll also need USB 2.0 in order to sync the current iPod models.

Is this a Tiger retail disk, or one that came with a Mac? You need the retail disk.

Run Disk Utility on the HD you are installing to, look for damage. Also run it on the install DVD.

Has the G4's optical drive been replaced? My Sawtooth is a little older than your dual 450. The optical drive got "weak" - it had trouble reading the 2nd layer of DVDs and would not read burned CD-R at all. If you have the original optical drive and Disk Utility isn't able to verify the entire install DVD, you may need to spend $30 for a new drive.

Had the same problem... take out any non-Apple RAM and it will install fine. It took me 2 weeks to find this out.

They will sync over USB 1. Just quite slowly.

Are you sure you have enough RAM and open hard drive space? I've installed 10.4 on machines of that vintage with no problems.

256MB of RAM
3GB of available hard disk space (4GB if you install the developer tools)

Edit: USB 2.0 PCI cards are dirt-cheap.
