i was using imac g3 dv indigo with 64 ram and os 9.4 wid firmwire update also, then later i installed debain linux and no mac os in it. now i just bought 1 gig ram(512x2). now it wont start up. when ever i try run my imac with debain linux it gives different error each time. but when i try to use it with only 512 ram then it run's. do i have to update the firmwire to use 1 gig ram support and i dont use mac os so how can i update firmwire.

what should i do

Should be fine to run 1GB in it. If there is a firmware update, you will probably need a Mac OS install to run it.
Does it matter which chip or slot you use when you only have 512MB? What if you put the 64MB stick back in with one of the 512MBs? Apple quote the limit as 512MB total (before the 512MB sticks came out), so if it sees 576MB (or 544MB if you had 2x32MB) then it probably isn't firmware.
