A powerful graphics processor with dedicated memory makes your entire computing experience better. Its job is to display 2D and 3D images on your display so that the CPU can focus on other computing tasks. The effects are most visible when working with three-dimensional graphics, high-resolution photos, high-definition video, and 3D games.
from apple.com about the imac's ati processor

when they say "high-definition"
do they mean what I think they mean?

No. By high definition, they mean that the definition for said video card would be found high up on it's respective page in any modern dictionary. Sometimes this is also taken to mean that it's definition does drugs, but usually only with Windows machine.

I iz hoping that anzer'd ur qweschun.

The GPU is capable of assisting in the decoding of the common HD video codecs; but it's entirely wasted because the OS X video drivers/media player apps don't take advantage of it.
Apple could swap in some decrepit old video card and it would have no impact on video playback.

It will disply 720p video which classifies it as able to handle HD content.

That doesn't mean I don't hate the way you write. I find it immature and childish. You'll go a long way if you'd find (and use) the shift key to properly capitalize words and names as well as stop using lame text messaging spelling.

I'm sure you are able to punctuate properly. Whether or not you came from a gamer forum or not doesn't matter. It is much easier to understand your questions if they are coherent. In the end it is better for everyone involved.

This is a forum about computers, not the finer points of typing, nor how one might be graded on an English assignment. Had there been a problem understanding posts due to lack of capitalization or punctuation, that would have been reason to comment on it. There wasn't. No more talk about English in this thread. I've said it and I AM WEASEL!!!! who, by the way, was voiced by Michael Dorn-better known for playing Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Uh huh!

Perhaps as mod you should be fixing the thread's title to more appropriately reflect the content of the thread? Perhaps?

Adding to it? Maybe. I've seen tons of "inappropriately titled" threads go for weeks without anyone getting irritated about it. Sure, it's not really clear, but at least it doesn't feature tons of ?!?!?!?! and "WTF!!!" and such. I consider that a step forward lately. I don't have the stamina of some prior mods who were able to police such things diligently. But sure, now that someone has asked, I'll make the title more descriptive.
