Nope. Macworld is the best bet. Although I could possibly see something with Leopard server and new Mac Pros but I doubt it.

An MP upgrade is so far overdue now, who knows? All the parts would seem to be available to Apple to allow for an Oct 26 announcement to show how fast Leopard can rock on world class Mac hardware. However any one of a number of reasons could cause Apple to delay the MP announcement. <sigh>

the 26th because thats when leopard is released. and thats when new computers with leopard pre-installed on them will ship. So it would make sense for them to release the new computers with leopard. It has also been since aug 06 since they released new mac pros. (they did add the 8 core option though). i really hope they dont wait all the way to mac world. i really need that new computer!

Knowing my luck, it probably will be the middle of November. I'll be in the early stages of cramming for a final exam and wouldn't have time to play with my first Mac. Then again, I'd rather not wait until MacWorld.

I'm holding off on several home video projects until I get my first Mac. It is too painful using my 5 year old PC to edit video.

I really don't see it. There are absolutely no rumblings coming from 1 Infinite Loop in this regard and they have always tried to align the desktop announcements with events of significance.

My vote is for Macworld

I don't think Apple would want Leopard to share the show with a new MP. Especially not since I don't get the impression Leopard's novelties are especially geared towards "pro" users or MP buyers.

Intel will launch Harpertown on Nov 11. Apple does not have to wait for this day to announce the new MP though. And actually they have in the past even shipped new Xeon and Merom XE models before Intel announced them. The MP needs this update. And Apple usually doesn't release new Macs in December. I'd therefore expect a new MP to be announced Nov 6 or Nov 13.

No Mac Pro until past MacWorld or in November. We won't see a Mac Pro update at MacWorld, but we will see a MacBook update. The Mac Pro will be updated not long after I believe.

AppleInsider | Apple to fire up Penryn-based Mac Pros

The new Mac Pro is most likely not coming until at least MacWorld in January.

Doesn't the article you just linked to imply they'll be coming within the next few weeks?

You should at least read an article before you link to it here.

The article specifically mentions that Apple is ready for the Harpertown/Seaburg MP now and that they will launch as soon as Intel starts shipping. The article also mentions mid Nov for the Intel Harpertown release (as we already knew).

I did read it, did you. It says that the top-bin Xeons will be trickling out from Intel STARTING in mid-November. Apple won't announce Mac Pro's without enough supply and a trickle isn't enough, so November is out. Apple won't announce anything in December. So it points to a January release.

A few things point to a longer wait past november...

1. Apple is likely to "sell-through" the current stock of Mac Pros before anouncing a new MAC Pro.

2. Apple appears to have dibs on Imtel's top binned parts, but when will Intel actualy deliver mass quantities.

3. Board design is critical as the "speed bump" is less than Apple normally would be looking to do.

4. the new generation of chips are bound to have errata to be sought out before they are ready for primetime.

What?

Apple will announce all models in October. They will ship all configurations in October, except for the high end one which will ship mid November in limited quantities. I went through the same thing when I bought my high end Powerbook years ago. Apple announced the 1 ghz Powerbook G4, and simply shipped them out as fast as they got the chips in.

Apple does not want to fall behind other PC manufacturers in getting Peryn out, and this focus on Macworld is silly. Apple no longer saves product announcements for Macworld really.

Actually it says any time after mid Nov and MWSF at the very latest. You may of course believe Apple will wait as long as possible, others chose to be more optimistic. Considering how long the MP has gone w/o an update (and therefore seriously needs one) I'll be part of the latter.

Of course this is all just rumors and speculation. We'll know for sure within the next couple of weeks.

Yes, we'll find out in a few weeks. If nothing gets announced in November, we know it's coming sometime in January. Who knows, maybe Apple will hog all the top-bin Xeons that come out and actually announce in November.

Actually, rumor is that this is exactly what they are doing.

The 3/3.2Ghz Mac Pro may not ship in November (I'd guess December if they're not available in production quantities in November), but the 2.mumble Ghz parts will, and those will make up the bulk of Mac Pro sales anyway.

1. Why would Apple have an significant stock of Mac Pros on hand now?

2. Yields are looking good for production volumes at launch of all bins.

3. Less? What, they're only going to double the number of cores and increase clockrates across the board (in addition to the GPU/RAM/HDD bumps). Also you think Intel might be helping them with board design?

4. Which Intel will have sorted out (and posted online) come launch time.

1. Apple is smart enough to plan ahead not to get stuck with large inventories of "old stock"

2. Oh! really, that would be interesting if true

3. you assume the base config will be 8-core 3.2GHz, I doubt that seriously. More likely base config will be 4-core ( single CPU ) 2.8Ghz 1600MHz FSB vs. the current 4-core ( double CPU ) 2.66Ghz 1333MHz FSB.

4. Yeah right! that would be novel

As I understand it, the Mac Pro's boards are actually built by Intel themselves by engineers in their Portland, OR facility.

Yea, it appears to be a slightly modified Intel S5000XVNSASR board (move the ports up, add FW800, risers for memory to allow the extra large heatsinks, swap BIOS for EFI). I wouldn't be surprised if Apple contracted out the design to Intel and Intel subcontracted out the manufacturing.
