*UPDATE*

I found this topic. I had my 16 GB iPod Touch connected through USB through the USB Apple Keyboard (flat) that I have. Perhaps this was the cause of this KP?

Apple - Support - Discussions - Shut Down Kernel Panic MBP ...

*original post*

Hello. I just joined this board because I am in need of help.

Last night I decide to shut down my new iMac. I purchased it three weeks ago. It's the model with the 2.8 Ghz processor. I have had no problems with it up til last night. As I'm shutting down, it fades to the usual blue screen, but all of a sudden the blue "rolls" into grey, and I get a message in multiple languages telling me that I have to reboot the computer.

It reboots fine, but it tells me that Mac OSX had crashed unexpectedly.

Is anyone able to tell me why this happened, perhaps? Is it a hardware issue? Software? Thank you very much...

what USB devices do you use with it, and which ones did you have plugged in when you were shutting it down?

I have the newer, flatter USB keyboard that came with the iMac and the wired Mighty Mouse plugged into that keyboard's right USB port. I had my iPod Touch (16 GB) plugged into the left USB port on the keyboard.

How are you able to diagnose that it is an issue with USB?

I'm just working off the backtrace that listed the IOUSBFamily.

Run Software Update to make sure you're running the latest software for your new keyboard.

Have you ever shut down the iMac before with your Touch plugged in?

All my Software is up to date.

I'm fairly sure I've turned it off with the iPod Touch connected. I know I ejected the iPod through iTunes, quit iTunes, let the computer sit for a second, and then went to shut it down. Despite having ejected the iPod, I did not physically disconnect it from my computer.

Probably the touch. It's not something to worry about unless it becomes a common occurrence.

I have a feeling the kernel panics will stop if you plug your iPod touch directly into a free USB port on the back of the iMac instead of on the keyboard.

The iPod touch's battery charges through USB, but if I remember correctly, the USB ports coming off the keyboard are not designed to deliver the power necessary to charge the battery. The resulting power imbalance is probably causing the KP.

You have to plug directly into the computer. Or, if you're out of USB ports, you should consider getting a USB 2.0 hub (don't get the cheap USB 1.0 versions, they are SLOW).
