iMac as sig.
Had it a few weeks, refurb model.
Just after turning on, a few days ago, within a few secs, very loud fan noise, first time happened.
Fan quiet after a minute or so.
Didn't check temp, or vents.
Room temp low, around 20ºC
Not happened since,

Try rebooting and see if it happens again... It may have been a one-time thing.

As it happened a few days ago, I have already rebooted a few times.
Perhaps it was a one-time thing.

My iMac's fans sometimes go for no apparent reason on full blast. It has only happend 2 or 3 times in the year that I've owned it... Nothing to worry about I guess.
They run a few seconds (can't put a number on it) on full speed and they spin down very slowly.
I'm on a 20" 2.16 C2D iMac.

I think after a particular software upgrade my iMac G5 fans went like crazy until it had completed updating... it sounds very alarming but I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts to happen more often.

My iMac's done the same thing, only about 3 times in the year that I've had it. (first 24" model) I can't explain it, but I don't think it's a problem.

It does that. On the iMac G5, the fans are controlled from OS, so if there is no contact with the OS for a while (as when it hasn't started yet) it will blow full blast to be on the safe side. I assume that the Intel models do something similar.

Could it be that you had the firmware update running?
Or that your iMac was in FireWire mode? (holding down the T-key during start-up, and getting the bouncing firewire symbol on a greenish grey screen)

I have had this problem with mine as well.
Apple Extended Warranty:
The program is available for certain first generation iMac G5 models that were sold between approximately September 2004 and June 2005 featuring 17- and 20-inch displays with 1.6GHz and 1.8GHz G5 processors.
The affected iMac G5 computers have serial numbers where the first 5 digits fall into the ranges noted below.
Serial Number ranges:
W8435xxxxxx - W8522xxxxxx
QP435xxxxxx - QP522xxxxxx
CK435xxxxxx - CK522xxxxxx
YD435xxxxxx - YD522xxxxxx
Some second generation iMac G5 computers have serial numbers that fall within the upper band of the ranges listed below. Only first generation iMac G5 computers are affected by this program.

Seriously, just read my post above. OS X from a certain version on has a routine that controls the fanspeed on G5s. If, after a certain delay, that routine has not started, the fans are run at max speed. Same if the OS has crashed, again after a certain delay. This is not a flaw - it is by design. Same thing happens if you boot from an OS that doesn't have the routine - the hardware test CD is one example. The flaw fivell is talking about is something different with a different symptom.
