or just the fan(s) inside it for that matter…
Due to the noise I have replaced the CPU fan but that didn't help, after reading some topics here I got a 120*120*25 fan which while extremely silent doesn't cool the Mac at all, CPU temp skyrocket from the typical 30º C to 40ª C in no time even when the fan is running non stop… nevertheless, the main issue here is the power supply noise and I 'need' to solve it… any advice is really welcome since the Verax M10 kit from www.verax.de is not any longer available.
This is a 2003 single 1,25 GHz MDD.

My dual G4 1.25Ghz processors temperature is around 58ºC. I did swap out the 120mm fan with a Panasonic Panaflo model few years ago. The noise is really from the fans from the PSU, but I don't feel like opening it up.
Which PSU you have? 360Watt? 400Watt?

Thanks for your reply Kenneth, this PSU is an AcBel API1PC36, 360 Watts, the two fans inside are 6*6*2,5 cm 12V, 0,4 Amperes… I need to open it in order to replace the loud fans… if this doesn't kill me maybe the dust could do it, this thing is full of dust and I am asthmatic
BTW and on a personal note, I had sent you a private some time ago but your inbox was full, is still so?, thanks again, let's see how it goes…

Also I am gonna to cut off the fan protections from the PSU metallic inclosure which seem to be prone to create turbulences… hence noise and vibrations, lots of them !!

I have the AcBel 360Watts PSU, but just don't feel like messing around with it.
Sorry about the full PM box.

Well, I did open it yesterday, the fans aren't any longer there, the power supply had an incredible amount of dust inside, now I am waiting for the presumably to be quieter fans ((CPU (1) and power supply (2)). Well, at least I was able to clean the inner of the MDD, now even the handles have that as new look
I'll let you know if replacing those three fans was any worth.

Wow, this reminded me... I used to have a 1.25 MDD, and wow, that thing was like a jet engine spooling up... Crazy.

I have a MDD (wind tunnel™) and QuickSilver 733Mhz PowerMac G4 sitting on my desk. The QS seems to be nosier. I guess I'm so get used to the noise level from the MDD.

OK, after dissembling the MDD once and again, replacing fans here and there, I ended with a quieter MDD than before, but that came at a cost, in a nutshell:
- CPU fan is new, I got this one Scythe Ultra Kaze 120mm Fan 2000rpm after getting the advice from the nice guy running this site: Bits & Pieces
- power supply fans are still the factory ones, I wasn't able to find 60mm. fans over here… the trick was to get them working with 5v. instead of 12v. this way they are remarkably quieter
- three or the four internal hard disk are out of the MDD, the biggest one inside a d2 LaCie and the remaining ones inside a locked drawer near me…
All for all I am kind of satisfied… CPU is still running cold, 31ºC (88º F) I don't need that much spare disk space and I can truly say the MDD is quieter than the Yosemite G3 I have side by side with it.

I replaced the PSU fan in my QS and it was no big deal. I couldn't find a fan with just the right connector, so I went down to the local electronic repair shop, and the guy snipped the connector off the old fan and soldered it onto the wires for the new one for $5.00.
Apple tried to tell me I had to replace the entire PSU, as the fan wasn't "user serviceble." What a crock. Most of my time was spent just tracking down a fan -- getting the PSU out and the fan swapped was pretty trivial.

Well.. don't opening a PSU is still *risky*? I'm sure any company would rather sell you the whole PSU. Since Apple doesn't sell the PSU fan alone, so there is not much to be play with.

i replaced the fan in my G4 PS, twice. The first one sounded like it was a jet motor. It was fiddley getting it apart and back together and watching what was touched, just because the power is disconnected doesn't mean capacitors are not still going to zap.

Apple may not sell the fan, but it doesn't mean they can't be had, and no it's not risky, either heath-wise, unless you leave your machine plugged in (this would be hard to do) or damage-wise, as the fan & its plug are just not that hard to get to, once you've pulled the PSU out of the machine. Apple just doesn't want to undermine a. their parts sales and b. their authorized service technicians. That's business.
Seriously, though -- fan=$5.00. PSU = $150.00. It's worth a $145.00 to me to spend an hour or two swapping a fan.

A capacitor is going to hold a charge for less than 30 minutes, at most. Unplug the machine, and by the time you've removed all the braces that hold the PSU in, and actually gotten it out in front of you, it's highly doubtful that it's going to have anything like a dangerous charge left in it. If you're worried, unplug it, and wait 15 minutes before proceeding with the removal.
